FC Barcelona played its first match at the newly built Camp Nou stadium on September 24, 1957. In the opening match, the opponents of the Pride of Catalonia were Polish players playing under the banner of the Warsaw national team. The initiative to play the opening match against the Poles came from FC Barcelona itself. The club's authorities invited Legia Warsaw, which was then considered one of the best teams in Central Europe, to cooperate. Polish football activists were afraid of a poor result, so they sent a team consisting of representatives of many national clubs to Catalonia, calling it the Warsaw national team. The opening ceremony began with a mass celebrated by the local archbishop Gregorio Modrego y Casaus. Then the audience was treated to a dance performance and the release of thousands of pigeons into the sky. Then the sports competitions began. The conditions of the competition were not equal, because only thirteen Poles arrived in Barcelona, so they did not have much opportunity to make changes. In the first half they set their opponents tough conditions and tied the game 2:2. Later, however, they lost their energy and conceded two more goals, losing the match by a score of 4:2. Both goals for Warsaw were scored by ŁKS Łódź players: Henryk Szymborski and Władysław Soporek (source: www.wszystkoconajwazniejsze.pl).November 2024
City break in Barcelona was Julek's first trip of this type with his mother. The weather, as usual at this time of year, was not very kind, but moods were good and the planned sightseeing schedule was carried out with iron consistency.
The capital of Catalonia is one of the most famous cities in Europe, combining a rich history, diverse culture and a passion for football. Although there are many impressive monuments in the Old Town, Barcelona's fame was brought by the Art Nouveau buildings erected in the Eixample district, and their most outstanding creator was Antonio Gaudi. It was his visionary and imaginative works, the result of a romantic search for the medieval past and modern principles of construction, that became the main objects of sightseeing.Barcelona
In Barcelona there are eight sites on the Unesco World Heritage List, six of which were designed by the brilliant architect and engineer Antonio Gaudi. Julek liked most the Sagrada Familia church, although he complained that the photos taken were blurry and did not show the impressive display of colors and lights inside the basilica. Fortunately, memories still remain.
