A TRIP ROUTE
IT IS WORTH KNOWING
The Polish Tatras, formerly known as the Nowy Targ or Galician Tatras, are part of the Tatra Mountains located in Poland. From the very beginning, the mountains formed a natural border between Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary. During the reign of Mieszko II (1031), the border was established so that Podhale belonged to Poland, while Orava, Liptov, and Spisz belonged to the Hungarians. However, for a long time, the border was not precisely demarcated; there were no accurate maps, and the Tatras constituted a strip of no man's land. As settlement developed, grazing, timber harvesting, and metal ore mining began, the border became increasingly precise, and border disputes became more frequent. In 1634, an agreement was signed between Poland and Hungary, defining the border in the Tatras. In 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, most of the Tatra Mountains became the property of the Habsburg Monarchy and became part of Galicia, while Austria ceded the portion of the Tatra Mountains within the Spiš region to the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1782, the Austrians drew the first accurate map of the Tatras. After 1918, a border dispute arose between the reborn Poland and Czechoslovakia. In 1920, a conference of Allied ambassadors demarcated this border in a way that was unfavorable to Poland, and it continued as it is today.August 1994
In the 1990s, I worked very hard and rested little. It was a time of building my professional career. I spent my holidays almost exclusively in Poland, most often around Krakow or in the Tatra Mountains. There were also business trips to Slovakia, during which, in addition to training, the organizers provided opportunities to visit attractive locations.
When a friend talked me into hiking, it turned out I was hooked. During several subsequent trips, this time on my own, I traversed the length and breadth of the Tatra Mountains. These were all-day trips of increasing difficulty. At that time, I had a small camera and didn't take many photos. Many were lost or destroyed, others never existed at all. I remember that while hiking the Orla Perć trail, the film got damaged, and all the photos I took were lost forever. It wasn't without tears.High Tatras
I went to the mountains with a friend who also shared my passion. During our few days together, we mainly hiked in the High Tatras. We saved the climb to Rysy for dessert. It wasn't easy, but we were rewarded with breathtaking views both during the approach and at the summit. However, what I remember most vividly was two guys playing a game of chess on the summit of Rysy peak.
